ABOUT THE TRAINING

Developed by CEO of Pamoja EDI Kevin B. Thomas, Behind Black Bars is an educational experience that brings you center stage with poverty’s inequitable impact on education, behavior, parenting, and equity in Black America. Blended with his unique storytelling approach and contemporary training practices, Kevin brings participants face to face where the unwavering determination to say “I Can” is cultivated by the unsympathetic realities of growing up in poverty and hopelessness. Behind Black Bars challenges participants to respond in a more focused and explicit way to address the social-economic barrier posed by Black Americans living below the poverty line.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

  • Develop an understanding of poverty’s impacts on education, behavior, parenting, and equity

  • Identify and support the strengths of Black Americans living in poverty

  • Identify cultural risk and protective factors and their relationship to behavior concerns with black children living in poverty 

  • Identify best practices that successfully effect change with Black Americans living in poverty 

  • Identify cultural barriers & increase cultural awareness among Black Americans living in poverty
